The Enigma Escape is a refined, adaptable and hugely capable titanium gravel and adventure bike. Perfect for ripping up your local trails or for simply escaping to some back of beyond forestry bridleway for those seeking a bit more solitude. Fit it with panniers and it makes the perfect companion for your bike packing and touring adventures.
Whatever you throw at the Escape, it handles it with ease.It is beautifully constructed and supremely versatile with handling that inspires confidence and encourages you to push the boundaries of your riding.
Enigma’s design brief when developing the Escape was to create a drop handlebar bike without limits. It should be capable of sustained off road use, loaded or unloaded. The ride should inspire confidence, with stable handling and maximised tyre clearance.
The Escape also works well as a robust and confidence inspiring road bike. Fitted with mudguards and 35-40mm tyres, it is ideal for back road touring or comfortable winter training rides. It is Enigma’s most versatile model, and one that can take on pretty much any conditions.
The Escape is built on the foundations laid by its predecessor, the Ecroix, but with improved geometry, cable routing, and an upgrade to bolt-thru axle/flat mount braking system. Enigma designed the original Ecroix with a more cyclocross style geometry, but with the Escape they have moved to a geometry that still handles well on the road, but really comes to life once you head off onto varied terrain – offering versatility from commuting and training, to adventure racing and world touring.
In 2019 Enigma updated the Escape to ‘Mk 2’ with some subtle changes. Size-specific tubing was introduced, to tune the ride quality for the frame size and reduce weight to a minimum. The geometry was also adjusted slightly to improve stand-over clearance on smaller models, and ensure the frames suited a larger range of riders. At the same time Enigma increased tyre clearance to help the bike fulfil its true potential off-road, with chain stay spacing increased to the absolute maximum possible; enabling the fitting of a 700 x 45mm tyre or a 650 x 2.1″ – Enigma suggest that the Escape can take even larger tyres in some brands, but we feel more comfortable in recommending 45mm or 2.1″ in any brand.
Cable routing is another area that Enigma have considered carefully. For the style of riding the Escape is intended for; where you may end up a long way from a bike shop, Enigma felt that keeping the cables external for ease of maintenance was the best solution – and we couldn’t agree more! The main cable run attaches underneath the downtube, out of sight for a neat and tidy solution. The cable guides bolt in place and can be adapted for 1x, 2x or electronic groupsets.
As a versatile bike the Escape naturally has full mudguard and pannier mounts, if you have luggage needs that move beyond the capacity of bike-packing bags – whether you’re commuting, touring the world or just messing about on your local MTB trails the Escape has got you covered.
